Tottenham want Eric Dier to follow Hugo Lloris in leaving Hotspur Way
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has provided insights into the club’s intentions for the January transfer window. According to Ornstein, Spurs are open to allowing Eric Dier to leave on a free transfer this month, echoing a similar move they recently made with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
The Frenchman recently made a move across the Atlantic to join Los Angeles FC on a free transfer. This decision came as Lloris had just six months remaining on his contract, and Spurs opted to let him go without receiving a transfer fee, a move that alleviates some financial burden in the current era of Financial Fair Play.
Now, Eric Dier also finds himself in a comparable situation, with only a few months left on his contract. The English defender has seen limited playing time under manager Ange Postecoglou, making just four appearances this season. The manager’s preference to play others over Dier has certainly seen his role diminish, prompting assertions that Postecoglou is open to selling the 29-year-old. Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE, Ornstein stated that Spurs are looking to offload Dier in the coming weeks.
“Hugo Lloris has already gone to LAFC. That doesn’t bring in a transfer fee but it moves his salary off the wage bill, which is crucial in this Financial Fair Play era.”
“They would very gladly do the same with Eric Dier, who’s out of contract next summer and is not part of the plans.”
What next for Dier?
The decision to potentially let Dier leave without a transfer fee certainly underscores Tottenham’s approach to managing their squad and finances.
With an emphasis on balancing the wage bill and adhering to Financial Fair Play regulations, Spurs are willing to part ways with players who may not be central to the manager’s plans, particularly if they are approaching the end of their contracts.
However, with Spurs eyeing a move for several players over the window, funds need to come in from somewhere. If we do not get a fee for these fringe players, Tottenham’s wish to get players on board might take a jolt.
As the January transfer window progresses, Tottenham supporters will closely monitor the developments surrounding player departures and arrivals.
