Tottenham star Pape Matar Sarr talks about his English speaking abilities after penning new contract
Before flying back to Senegal for AFCON duties, Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr put pen to paper, signing an extension deal at the club.
After having joined the Lilywhites from Metz back in 2021, he went back to the Ligue 1 side on loan. Sarr made his Tottenham debut in January 2023 and since then, has claimed his spot in the starting XI, and has been among the first names on the teamsheet under Ange Postecoglou.
His new deal with the club lasts until 2030 (Transfermarkt). After the extension, he sat with the club’s media team talking through what stood out to him and made him want to prolong his stay at Hotspur Way and also, adding a bit of humour, gave an update on his English speaking abilities.
Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel, here is what Sarr had to say:
“Yes, I speak a bit of English and I have classes with a tutor, and I follow a course on my laptop but I’m not rushing into doing interviews in English yet.”
“But I speak with my teammates and with the coach, I speak English with them, aso yes, soon I expect I’ll be able to undertake some media in English and express myself as I’d like.”
Ton anglais est bon, Pape !
19 appearances, two goals and two assists this season for Sarr. However, his performances cut across his ability to find his teammates and the back of the net. What he excels at is bridging the gap between the backline and the attack alongside his top-notch defensive contributions.
Sarr is an excellent player in the middle of the park, and the way he controls the tempo of the game to suit his side is one of his best attributes.
His comfort on the ball and vision make him a valuable asset for Tottenham, especially considering his age and the potential for further growth under the guidance of Postecoglou. As Sarr continues to settle into life at Tottenham and develop his language skills, the extension of his contract signals the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent.
The midfielder’s journey reflects not only his prowess on the field but also his determination to integrate into the English-speaking environment, a crucial aspect for effective communication within the team.

Having said that, if he continues to put in performances like he has been consistently, we can do with Sarr not speaking perfect English. He has ticked the main box of top-class performances like a pro and the rest is just adding up to it.
