Tottenham inch closer to secure the services of Timo Werner after first scouting him in 2015
Football is a very funny sport, especially on the transfer front. Cristiano Ronaldo was all equipped to move to Arsenal when Arsene Wenger first scouted him during his time at Sporting CP. It took magic from Sir Alex Ferguson to get him to move to Manchester United instead.
To think that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp wanted Julian Brandt and Mario Gotze but the club insisted on Mohamed Salah, is a piece of news that is, intriguing to say the least. Tottenham are in the midst of one such intrigue now. As we inch closer to securing the services of Timo Werner albeit on loan from RB Leipzig for the rest of the season, it was in 2015 that the German striker first caught the Lilywhites’ attention. To the level that Spurs opened talks with his employers. ( via Telegraph – subscription required )
Playing for VfB Stuttgart, he caught the attention of then-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino. Playing off the left predominantly back then, Werner scored three goals and secured one assist to boot in 32 Bundesliga appearances as a 19-year-old in the 2014-15 season.
He always had the raw abilities. Extreme pace, physical strength and the versatility to fit in anywhere across the front three. However, it only took a move to RB Leipzig for Werner to hit the limelight. Following Stuttgart’s relegation in 2016, the German international then moved to Leipzig and his top-class performances there saw him linked with a move to Chelsea and Liverpool.
All about time.
He eventually joined the Stamford Bridge outfit in 2020. He won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021. The raw abilities that Tottenham had recognized back in 2015 had matured into a potent force, showcasing his prowess on the biggest stages. However, he was distant from the finished product because he was far from clinical in front of goal. He returned to Leipzig in 2022.
Fast forward to the present, and the carousel has brought Timo Werner back into Tottenham’s orbit. The Lilywhites are on the verge of securing the German striker on loan from RB Leipzig for the remainder of the season as Werner nears the completion of his medical at Hotspur Way. The same player who caught Mauricio Pochettino’s eye in 2015 is now on the cusp of donning the Lilywhite shirt under Ange Postecolgou, albeit temporarily. Werner could start on the wings for Tottenham in the absence of captain Son Heung-min and could also challenge Richarlison for the striker spot as he has distinct qualities.
