Cristian Stellini has his verdict on Djed Spence leaving Spurs
According to the Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, former Tottenham Hotspur caretaker manager Cristian Stellini has his say on Djed Spence leaving Spurs.
The ex-Grifone defender, who also served as Antonio Conte’s assistant during their time at Tottenham, had the opportunity to coach the talented winger from the summer of 2022 until January 2023.
Stellini said:
“Spence is a very polite boy, very reserved. I would define him as very calm, with great explosiveness and great speed. The English league has a lot of these types of very physical talents. He is a 23-year-old boy who has a lot of room for improvement, especially in the final phase of the action, both in finishing and in making assists.”
The 49-year-old’s tenure will not be remembered favourably by the fans due to the disappointing results, but his knowledge of Spurs players surpasses that of all of us. Stellini also has a strong tie to Genoa, as he spent three years playing for the club before transitioning to a coaching role in their academy for a couple of seasons.
According to an expert in the field, Spence is being hailed as a remarkable talent with impressive speed, explosiveness, and physicality. However, there is still ample room for improvement, particularly in his offensive abilities. Daniel Levy outmanoeuvred a host of top clubs to secure the signing of the highly sought-after full-back.
Nevertheless, Spence’s experience in senior football for Tottenham has been limited to just 41 minutes, and he has already been loaned out twice. He is about to embark on his third stint away from Spurs, this time to Genoa.
Spence displayed his genius at Nottingham Forest while working under the mentorship of Steve Cooper. At the end of that season, his outstanding performances handed him a switch from his previous team Middlesbrough to Spurs in a deal worth up to £ 20 million.

Spence may have faced some unfair circumstances upon joining Spurs, though. The transfer was led by Fabio Paratici, Spurs’s then-managing director of football. However, the England Under-21 international soon found himself caught in the middle of Conte’s power struggle with the club.
