Mark Lawrenson believes Tottenham will repeat what they did under Jose Mourinho in 2020
Former Liverpool star and football pundit Mark Lawrenson has backed Tottenham Hotspur to beat Manchester United in the upcoming Premier League fixture, per media website Paddy Power. Manchester United will be hosting Tottenham on Sunday as a part of the reverse fixture. Spurs had defeated the Red Devils 2-0 at home the previous time they met.
The win that came in August 2023 was Spurs’ first win against Manchester United since 4th October 2020. Lawrenson says,
“Manchester United strolled past Wigan as they should do. You can sit here and talk about Manchester United all day but you just don’t know what team’s going to turn up. I’m going to go for Spurs to win this. They won’t change the way they play and they’ll be a bit open which will obviously help United but they create lots and lots of chances.”
Tottenham defeated Manchester United by 2-0 in August
Mark Lawrenson believes Ange Postecoglous will be able to pull off what Jose Mourinho did in 2020. Mourinho was the last Spurs manager to pull a win against Manchester United in Old Trafford. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were thrashed 1-6 by the visitors.
The current scenario
Even though Manchester United has the home turf advantage, Mark Lawrenson’s claims are justified. Spurs are building themselves back despite being marred with injuries and suspensions. The Londoners sit 5th on the league table as opposed to their opponents who occupy the 9th spot.
Tottenham has won the last four of their five games and Manchester United has done exactly the opposite by winning just one out of five. The odds and the form strongly favour Postecoglou’s side. The pressure will be much more on the Dutch manager who is walking a thin line already.
