Tottenham star Micky van de Ven says the pace of Timo Werner makes him a real threat
In a not-so-obvious revelation that would make even the Digital Gatsos of the M6 blush, Micky van de Ven declared the pace of new signing Timo Werner as a real menace and a potential game-changer for Spurs.
Having previously engaged in a footrace with Werner during their Bundesliga escapades – Van de Ven donning the Wolfsburg colours and Werner being the pace merchant at RB Leipzig – the Dutch defender knows firsthand the perils of trying to catch the German speedster.
Micky’s candid admission about Werner’s “blink-and-you-miss-it”-esque pace adds a dash of thrill to Tottenham’s attacking palette under the management of Ange Postecoglou.
Here is what Micky told BBC about the pace of Werner:
“I played against him already with Leipzig and I know he has a lot of pace. He can be really important for us.”

The Premier League already knows about how lethal Timo can be for backlines. Apart from his finishing which can obviously improve with time, the fact that he can give a tough time to the defences of the English first-division makes him as important as Micky says.
In the recent showdown against Manchester United, where Werner made his league debut for Spurs, the turbo boost button stood unmistakably pressed. With his rapid sprints and cunning runs, the German dynamo left the United defence feeling like they were in a footrace against the Road Runner more often than not. It was a performance that not only showcased Werner’s ability to give defenders a run for their money but also his knack for adding a touch of pizzazz as he got an assist to boot against the Red Devils.
Van de Ven’s acknowledgement of Werner’s speed is less folklore and more common knowledge.
In a league where even the slowest defenders can outrun your average track and field athlete, Werner’s speed is the kind of trivia that comes up in quizzes: “Who in the Premier League can give Olympic sprinters a run for their money?” Answer: Timo Werner. Or Darwin Nunez. But Werner is the one wearing Lilywhite so we have our biases.

In a sport where the element of surprise is celebrated, Werner’s pace isn’t a twist; it’s a recurring plotline. It’s the kind of speed that even the most seasoned defenders can’t ignore, and the opposition can’t help but respect. If he somehow takes his finishing up by a notch, ring up Houston, cause the league will have a problem for sure.
