Thierry Henry mocked Tottenham while accepting Leo Messi’s award
Thierry Henry used the FIFA BEST stage to take a dig at Tottenham Hotspur. The Frenchman was on the stage to collect the FIFA BEST Men’s Player award on Lionel Messi‘s behalf on the night of Monday, 15th January.
The Inter Miami player wasn’t present to collect the award or to deliver the speech. The Arsenal legend went ahead to deliver a short speech but at the expense of his former rivals. Henry turned to his co-host Reshmin Chowdhury, a Spurs fan and said:
“You’re a Tottenham fan right? You don’t usually get your hands on a trophy, so I’ll take this one,” Henry said, eliciting applause and laughter from the crowd.
However, it is also to be noted that, Henry did take a jibe at himself before going to Spurs, the World Cup winner also said:
“Two reasons for taking it. I have never won it. So, I will take it”.
Thierry Henry’s “humour” was indeed a bitter truth
Even though the Arsenal legend was being funny with his comments during the acceptance speech on behalf of Lionel Messi, the truth stung many Spurs fans. The North Londoners’ major English trophy came in the 1960-61 season.
The club has never won the title after it was switched to The Premier League from Football League First Division. The most recent win for Tottenham Hotspur came in the form of the 2007–08 EFL Cup. The Lilywhites did come close to the League Cup in 2021 but succumbed to Man City.
Tottenham also came close to securing European glory in the 2019 UEFA Champions League final but lost to eventual champions Liverpool. Rival fans often take a jibe at Spurs by calling them “Audi Cup winners” as that’s the most recent trophy the Londoners could lay their hands on.
