Darren Brent believes Tottenham Hotspur ‘virtually’ won the game against Manchester United

Former Tottenham Hotspur player and current football talk show Pundit Darren Brent has praised Spurs’ performance against Manchester United in a talkSPORTS YouTube podcast. Brent said:

“They (Spurs) were very good. A good game of football. Spurs did really good in the second half but they were unfortunate not to win the game.”

His co-host Andy Goldstein did try to rile up (jokingly) about how Spurs didn’t do enough to win the game. But, Brent stood his ground by comparing the stats. The latter further emphasized the small details like shots on goal, possession and the style of play, all that was dominated by the Londoners.

Tottenham dominated with 64% possession as opposed to Manchester United’s 36%. Spurs also had 16 attempts on goal out of which nine were directed towards the target. United lag behind with just nine attempts and only two on target.

Are Brent’s claims justified?

In simple words, no! Tottenham Hotspur entered the pitch as favourites and with their defence up and running, there cannot be any excuse for trailing the game twice. They also went with a proven mix of players with Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner added to their ranks. Ange Postecoglou’s side should have scored more goals considering the possession and shots taken.

Tottenham cannot afford this slip-up, especially now that they are trying to build their back up. Capitalizing after dominating the opposition at their home should have been the end result. However, that wasn’t the climax awaiting The Lilywhites.

Ange Postecoglou and Co. have to answer their fans who are massively disappointed following the club’s poor performance after the first 10 games. On the other hand, United entered the game without much hope but took away a crucial point despite being outplayed by the opposition.

Spurs haven’t defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford since October 2020. Jose Mourinho was the last manager to pull that stunt. The Aussie head coach came narrowly closer but alas!
