Former Chelsea man favours his club over Tottenham but admits the latter are better at present
Chelsea cult hero Mario Melchot was asked to pick between Chelsea and Spurs in ESPN FC’s YouTube podcast. The Dutchman was asked by Dan Thomas,
“If you (Mario Melchot) have to choose between Spurs and Chelsea as a player right now, where would you go?”
This was Melchot’s response:
“I don’t think it’s the best answer because I will never go to Spurs because it doesn’t make sense. But if you are talking football-wise, you will go to Spurs. They are playing great football.
Melchot went on to appreciate Tottenham’s uprise under Ange Postecoglou and added Spurs are playing like never before, especially with the attack. The former Netherlands player did justice to his past club by not taking a jibe at Chelsea’s present scenario.
Mario Melchot rather focused on Tottenham’s strong points. The North Londoners have been incredible lately and were most likely to dominate the league if not for injuries and suspension.
Settling the debate
Tottenham and Chelsea have been rivals from the beginning of time. Hailing from the same city, the two often locked horns in scintillating clashes throughout history. However, Tottenham Hotspur are far off from matching Chelsea’s glorious legacy.
The West London club have won 2 x Champions League, 1 x FIFA Club World Cup, 6 x Premier League (also Football League First Division until 1992), 2 x UEFA Supercup, 2 x Europa League, 2 x Cup Winners Cup, 8 x FA Cup, 5 x EFL, and 4 x English Super Cup, throughout the history. (Transfermarkt)
On the other hand, Tottenham have 2 x Football League First Division, 2 x UEFA Cup, 1 x Cup Winners Cup, 8 x FA Cup, 4 x EFL, and 7 x English Supercup under their belt. (Transfermarkt)
The Lilywhites are miles away from matching Chelsea’s numbers. Spurs won their last trophy in the 2008/09 season. Whereas, Chelsea secured 14 trophies after that! Chelsea have often maintained domination over their rivals within the Premier League and other competitions. But Spurs have outdone the Blues by far margin this season.
