Alasdair Gold reveals Tottenham scouted Arthur Vermeeren
According to reliable Tottenham Hotspur journalist Alasdair Gold as he revealed on Football. London, Tottenham Hotspur have kept their eyes on Arthur Vermeeren, another prodigy in the Belgian league other than Antonio Nusa.
Nusa has been a name on the lips of Spurs fans and media alike, in the past few days. The North London club are keen on making the talented attacker one of their own, with an eye to bring him in, come the summer of 2024.
It’s no surprise why Spurs want Nusa. Norwegian prodigies have been the flavour of the Premier League in the past couple of seasons. Arsenal started it off with Martin Odegaard and Manchester City have their own robot in Erling Haaland.
Nusa aside, it looks like Tottenham have cast a wider net in the Belgian pool. Midfield is an area where Spurs want reinforcements, understandably. Arthur Vermeeren fits the bill for exactly what Ange Postecoglou would expect from a midfielder.
Gold’s revelation that Spurs are keeping tabs on the 18-year-old comes as no surprise. Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have been extensively trusted by Postecoglou so far this season. Rodrigo Bentancur is expected to feature more, now that he is fit. Beyond this though, the options don’t inspire much confidence.
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!
According to the number crunchers at FBREF, Vermeeren ranks in the 82nd percentile for progressive passes, 80th for blocks, 79th for clearances, and 74th for interceptions and assists. A well-rounded defensive midfielder.
Having someone like Vermeeren in midfield might liberate the likes of Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur. It’s just the kind of signing that could make a difference between Spurs being title challengers and title contenders.
Well, it all sounds rosy and ideal but with all due respect to the Belgian league, the English top flight is a steep step up in class. What gives confidence though is the fact that Vermeeren has seemed at home in the Champions League, even whilst facing the likes of Barcelona.
