Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Arthur Vermeeren has been hijacked by Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid is set to hijack Tottenham Hotspur’s target Arthur Vermeeren, per RMC Sport correspondent Sacha Tavolieri. The journo took it to X to share the details. There will be a five-year deal on the table. The speculated free is €27M.
The central midfielder is a prominent figure at Royal Antwerp, playing 21 games, amassing a goal and three assists. He also captained Antwerp against Porto in a Champions League fixture at the age of 18. Vermeeren earned enough spotlight even though his club finished last in the group.
Prominent football journalist Fabrizio Romano shared via X about Atletico’s progress with Arthur Vermeeren. This must be a shocker for the North Londoners, who have been eyeing the midfielder for quite some time now, per 90MIN.
Tottenham have signed Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner this January with heated attempts to lock in on a midfielder. There is less than a week for Ange Postecoglou to find a viable target.
Arthur Vermeeren was perhaps too big for Spurs
Spurs indeed need reinforcements in the midfield unit but with the number of talents within the club, a prodigy will be the right fit. A player of Arthur Vermeeren’s calibre will not settle for being a second fiddle.
Transfermarkt ranks him third in the market value rise amongst teenage midfielders in 2023. Additionally, the 18-year-old is also used to playing Champions League football. The chances of him getting to play European football are better (almost certain) with the Roji Blancos compared to Tottenham.
Tottenham Hotspur can at least be relieved that the prodigy won’t be joining any rival clubs. The snub should not be taken negatively by Ange as he will soon have his star man back to complete fitness. James Maddison is gearing up to mark his return after being injured in October.
