Arthur Vermeeren ditches Tottenham Hotspur and several EPL clubs to join Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid beat Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Arthur Vermeeren. The Roji Blancos shared the news of the starlet’s arrival via their X post.
The 18-year-old midfielder is signed with the La Liga outfit for six seasons, apart from the remainder of the season. His breakthrough with Royal Antwerp raised interest from many top clubs from Europe. Diego Simeone managed to disappoint the long queue by convincing the Belgian to join his side rather than move to the Premier League.
Apart from Tottenham, it is also Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United who had to settle with the disappointment. There were also Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Barcelona in the chase but, The Sun reports, many clubs had to wait until the summer to stay within the FFP rules.
Transfermarkt dubs the prodigy as the ‘next de Jong’. According to them, Arthur Vermeeren has also seen the third-highest market value rise amongst teenage midfielders in 2023.
Not much of a miss for Ange
Truth be told, the current Tottenham Hotspur squad looks well set. Postecoglou has welcomed back several injured players back to full fitness and is ready to be deployed. Within a few weeks, he will also have Heung-min Son, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr back from national duties.
There is also Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin who have joined Ange’s ranks this month. Well, there is always room for more talent, so we should also reflect on Tottenham Hotspur being the strong contenders to sign Antonio Nusa from Club Brugge.
Missing out on a player of Arthur Vermeeren’s calibre is surely a loss, but the club certainly has plans for another prodigy soon enough. Also, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski’s return should be enough for the Spurs boss to not miss out on any midfield talent.
