Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is disappointed with the referee’s decision-making in the Premier League fixtures
Speaking to the BBC, Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou shared his thoughts on the way the referee’s have performed lately in the Premier League. The lack of real-time decision making by the refs and the reliance on VAR is what concerns the Spurs manager.
Addressing the issue, Postecoglou said:
“It seems like referees just let things go nowadays and let VAR decide. We’re disappointed to concede so late. It seems like there’s a trend with us that referees aren’t prepared to intervene in those kind of situations, we have to accept that.”
Postecoglou also criticised Everton, suggesting that their only effective strategy was to send aerial balls into the penalty area, as both goals were scored from crosses. Guglielmo Vicario, the custodian, faced constant pressure from the home players throughout the first half. But then, it is not for us to complain given that we failed to deal with their approach effectively.
After witnessing Manchester City’s successful goal from a corner against Tottenham in the FA Cup, where the ball was expertly delivered to custodian Vicario’s head and Ruben Dias prevented his clearance, Everton decided to adopt a similar strategy. In the 30th minute, Everton managed to score a goal through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, making the score to 1-1. This goal seemed to unsettle Vicario and Spurs, and it showed.
Everton sensed an opportunity and continued with their strategy, coming close to scoring again before the break. Vicario made a crucial save on Ben Godfrey’s header and managed to kick the ball away before Harrison could capitalize on the rebound.
With the return of Cristian Romeo and Micky van de Ven from injury, as well as the addition of Radu Dragusin, Postecoglou will be looking to strengthen Tottenham’s backline after their struggles earlier in the season. However, their unfortunate trend of conceding goals in the 90th minute continues, which puts them at risk of falling out of the top four by the end of the weekend.

In the dying moments of the game, Postecoglou’s team unfortunately couldn’t maintain their lead, with Jarrad Branthwaite’s attempt rebounding off Cristian Romero finding the back of the net, leaving Guglielmo Vicario helpless at the far post. Despite earning a point, Everton still find themselves in the relegation zone as they prepare to face Manchester City next Saturday.
