Conte says it was a miracle to qualify for the 2022 Champions League with Tottenham
Former Spurs manager Antonio Conte says the club’s Champions League qualification in 2022 was a miracle, per BBC Sports. The Italian manager shared his experience during the Tottenham stint while speaking to the Telegraph. He said:
“With all the problems we faced, [it] was a miracle. We didn’t celebrate like it was a miracle because I am used to winning.”
The Lilywhites were eighth in the league when Conte took over the management from Nuno Espírito Santo. The North Londoners secured the fourth place on the final matchday, breezing past Arsenal by two points.
Tottenham Hotspur managed to top their Champions League group table before bowing out of the competition in the round of 16. The narrow 1-0 (aggt.) loss was enough to end their dreams. Conte soon left the club by mutual consent.
Conte’s departure left the club at the stewardship of Cristian Stellini. The former Juventus manager is now without a job, recovering from health issues.
The Conte effect
Conte joined Tottenham on 2nd November 2021 after the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo. He was given an 18-month contract with the option of another year. He arrived in North London after helping Inter Milan secure the scudetto for the first time in 11 years.
Conte’s stint at Tottenham was marked in style as he became the first-ever Spurs manager to go unbeaten in their first eight EPL games. He also helped the Lilywhites qualify for the 2022 UCL for the first time since the 2019/20 season.
Coming to the most crucial point. Present Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has much to thank his predecessor. Conte made calculated purchases during his stint with Spurs. Richarlison, Romero, Bissouma, Bentancur, Udogie, Kulsevski, and Porro — most of Ange’s trusted players arrived during Conte’s reign.
