Fabrizio Romano has his say on FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong potentially joining Tottenham Hotspur
According to Caught Offside, famous Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano addressed that he’s still unsure if FC Barcelona will actuall lets their key midfielder Frenkie de Jong leave amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
De Jong is a star for both club and country and this season is no exception with him occupying a key role in Xavi Hernandez’s plans. With the whole game on his shoulders, the Dutchman is the player who dictates how the game flows, both defensively and offensively, and sets the tempo. Having moved to Barcelona from Ajax Amsterdam in July 2019, De Jong continues to prove his worth by clocking up 206 appearances for the Catalan team to date
Fabrizio said: Daily Briefing
“There have been lots of rumours about Frenkie de Jong lately guys, but I can tell you that Barcelona will try to extend his contract in the next months”.
While it makes sense for Barcelona to retain their man, financial difficulties might force their hand. Cashing in on De Jong could prove to be a shot in the arm for the Spanish giants. Manchester United are once again sniffing around for the player while Tottenham Hotspur have also entered the fray. If R omano is to be believes, the Spaniards will do all they can to retain their midfield star.
It appears that Ange Postecoglou has developed a cohesive and reliable group at Hotspur Way, meaning that perhaps no player insisting on a large wage will necessarily be pursued by him. It’s hardly conceivable that Tottenham Hotspur would pursue a player like De Jong, who earns significantly more at his parent club.
Spurs have reportedly made an offer to sign the former Ajax star, but it’s worth noting that they are also interested in Raphinha, who is rumored to have a higher likelihood of being sold this summer.
De Jong has been an integral part of Xavi’s plans since his arrival, but the Netherlands international could face uncertainty now that the Spanish manager has announced he will leave the position at the end of the current campaign. This season, Barcelona’s number 21 has made 23 appearances and scored one goal across all competitions.
