Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou reflects on the goals conceded against Wolves
After the disappointing 2-1 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, speaking to the BBC post-match, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou said that Wolves were outstanding in their counter-attacking.
Since Wolves were the superior team for the whole match and Spurs couldn’t keep riding a wave of second-half heroics, the final score seems to be reasonable. Compared to the other three home first halves, this one was more characterised by Wolves’ compact organisation, Brighton’s man-to-man marking, and Brentford’s ability to force Spurs into a fragmented, stop-start game that they preferred not to play.
Postecoglou said:
“Both goals are disappointing from our point of view. We paid the price for not being as concentrated or disciplined in our football.”
Wolves had a few good counter-attacks before and after Gomes’ second goal, but Spurs were ultimately undone following Yves Bissouma’s careless touch. Wolves made sure that wouldn’t happen this time, in contrast to their last two matches against Brentford and Brighton, where they may have escaped punishment by taking a poor start but ultimately winning.
The injury rulings of Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie provided a huge setback to Tottenham’s lineup for their match against Wolves. Although they are only expected to be out for a brief period, Postecoglou will be eager to start his full-backs against Crystal Palace in Tottenham’s Premier League comeback match at the start of next month.
April and the early part of May will see Tottenham playing against some of their toughest opponents – Newcastle United, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool. Spurs hope it doesn’t happen again like this, as they had a similar streak last year and were knocked out by Newcastle and Liverpool on the run, which cost their chances of playing in the European Championship severely.
That is why it is critical to acquire points now; they might mean everything in May. With a two-week vacation to regroup after their loss to Wolves and get ready to face Crystal Palace, Spurs need to get back on track since they are now in the Champions League playoff hunt with Villa and Manchester United.

But a good team usually plays well, dictates the rules of the game, takes control in the first minute, and never lets the other side have a footing. In recent months, Spurs have progressively drifted away from the kind of game that they aim to play. Perhaps this long-overdue loss will serve as a reminder to play better.
