Dejan Kulusevski slams his Tottenham Hotspur defensive unit for not working hard
Dejan Kulusevski lashes at his team’s defensive prowess following the 1-2 loss against Wolves, per beIN SPORTS. Joao Gomes‘ brace was enough to hand the team an embarrassing loss at home despite even scores right at the start of the second half. He said:
“We had a lot of chances, we can’t score them and then not enough discipline when we lost the ball. They had two or three counter-attacks where we’re not good enough and they made us pay. After that, it is difficult to come back again in the game.”
The Swedish national was particular in criticizing Tottenham’s high-up-the-pitch style of play. He was also vocal about the lack of hard work from the defensive unit. The former Juventus man backed his coach’s statement who said hard work is the only solution left with them.
The North Londoners have two weeks before their next game to recoup. As of now, Spurs have slipped down to the 5th spot in the league table once again.
Results of bad tactics?
Micky van de Ven’s pace is renowned. The Dutchman broke the record for being the fastest Premier League player in the history. Maybe this is the cause of Tottenham’s high-press football.
Maybe the team believes in their speedy defenders who can chase and diffuse the counterattacks. But Tottenham’s failure to adapt to the current situation cost them dearly. The Lilywhites seem to have forgotten the fact that they were without their speedster wingbacks Udogie and Porro.
The team seemed to have relied entirely on Micky van de Ven to stop the counterattack. But one man wasn’t enough against Pedro Neto and Joao Gomes that evening. Ange’s men have managed to keep clean sheets in just five games this season.
This highlights the void at the heart of Spurs defence. However, one can also not be too harsh on them as the North London outfits were without their string centre-back duo Romero and Micky for a considerable period.
