Jose Mourinho was keen to reunite with Tottenham legend Hugo Lloris at AS Roma

Jose Mourinho wanted to sign Tottenham Hotspur legend Hugo Lloris at AS Roma before he was sacked by the club, according to a report in Italian media by TuttoMercatoWeb.

He wanted to sign the French World Cup winner in the 2023 summer transfer window but it was not to happen. Having managed Lloris while at Tottenham, Jose would have been very sure of what the veteran brings to the table.

There were many eyebrows raised when Hugo Lloris stayed at Tottenham last summer. He had fallen down the pecking order at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster were ahead of him in the pecking order.

Hugo Lloris has played 444 games for Tottenham Hotspur in all competitions and has kept 151 clean sheets. To argue that he is one of the finest goalkeepers to ever play for us would be an understatement. Lloris eventually got his move. The French goalkeeper moved to the Major League Soccer (MLS) side Los Angeles FC last month.

Jose Mourinho wanted to reunite with Hugo Lloris. The pair worked together during Jose Mourinho’s stint as manager of Tottenham Hotspur.

The 61-year-old manager was not convinced by Mile Svilar and he wanted to bring Hugo Lloris into the fold at Roma. Hugo Lloris would offer competition to Mile Svilar and Rui Patricio at the Stadio Olimpico but the move did not go through.

It is reported that Hugo Lloris’ move to AS Roma did not go through because the owners ‘vetoed the move’ to not bring him to Italy. The Frenchman might have been past his peak, but he could have done a wonderful job in a slower league like Serie A. But then, it is their loss.

During the summer transfer window, Hugo Lloris was also linked with a move to Roma’s arch-rivals, Lazio. The deal with Lazio collapsed as Hugo was unsure about the time he would get to play under Maurizio Sarri.

He eventually stayed in North London and got a move to a place where he would be free from media pressure and get to play minutes which is a good thing considering what he wanted.
