Academy graduate Maeson King signs his first professional contract at Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur Academy shared the news of Maeson King signing his first professional contract, via their X (formerly Twitter) handle. The 18-year-old is a versatile defender proving his prowess as a left-back and a centre-back.
He has been a regular figure for Tottenham’s Under-18 team this season. Maeson joined the Spurs academy, aged 10. The Basildon-born defender ascended through the ranks and completed his scholarship with the North Londoners in July 2022.
The 2022/23 campaign was a standout season for King. He was a part of Tottenham’s Under-17 Premier League Trophy-winning squad and also played a small but significant part in the Under-18 title victory. Maeson King was an influential figure in Tottenham’s double at the youth level.
Signing a professional contract means King will now be available for senior team training sessions and matches. He will have to work harder to be spotted by Ange Postecoglou and kick-start his pro career.
The difficult journey ahead
While Maeson King proved his worth, earning a pro contract in the process, he has a long way ahead of him in terms of securing the first-team berth. Unfortunately for King, Postecoglou is exploited for choices at defence.
Apart from his priority back four options comprising Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie, he has another formidable and versatile option in Radu Dragusin. Dragusin arrived in North London after a fine run in form in Genoa.
There are also Emerson Royal and Ben Davies at Postecoglou’s dispersal. Maeson King’s performance during the training session might help him squeeze his way into the team list, if not starting XI.

The exit of Ben Davies or Emerson Royal will pave the way for King but there is no solid news about their departure. One hope of King is Ange Postecoglou’s keen eye for youth talents. Perhaps Tottenham will see many prodigies within the ranks in the near future.
