Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou praises his leaders for stepping up amid Crystal Palace adversity
Any long-term success is built on deep culture and personnel and Ange Postecoglou knows this all too well. Strong leaders make a strong army, an army that can shuffle through to make an impact.
Tottenham are blessed with multiple leaders that can have an impact on and off the pitch. One of the first things that Ange Postecoglou did since taking on the reigns at Tottenham Hotspur stadium was recognizing the dressing room leaders who can lead his imaginations on the pitch.
This goes beyond players having the skipper’s armband, this goes to their personalities to inspire in the most difficult of times. Difficult time was what the North London side endured on the pitch against Crystal Palace on the weekend. Trailing by a goal and going into the final quarter of the game with massive pressure to get all three points to stay in the race for a Champions League place finish, the leaders stepped up.
Losing two games on the trot would have been a massive blow to Tottenham’s pursuit of Aston Villa’s fourth position. That was when the leader got their heads up and inspired at N17 on Saturday.
James Maddison started pulling strings from the midfield, Cristian Romero scored the second goal to give Tottenham the lead while Son Heung-Min scored Spurs’ third goal to take all three points.
Speaking about his leaders after the game, Ange Postecoglou praised how three of his leaders stood up to the situation yesterday. The Australian coach credited the mentality and belief that all of the aforementioned three showed. He also credited the supporters for being a massive part of the win and pushing the players as they did against Crystal Palace amid adversity.
Speaking to Sky Sports (via. BBC) Ange Postecoglou said:
“All three of our leaders were outstanding. Madders [James Maddison] and Romero [Cristian Romero] were involved in the second goal, Sonny [Son Heung-min] with the third goal. It is a credit to them. They have a strong mentality and lead by example. They stood up when we needed them.
“The supporters have been outstanding. They have real belief in what we are trying to do. We still have a long way to go in terms of being the football team we want to but I don’t think they have ever come to the stadium and thought the lads have not given everything.”
