The new Champions League format might be beneficial for Tottenham and Aston Villa
Fabrizio Romano reshared the UEFA Champions League’s post via X (formerly Twitter). The post explains the new Champions League format which might be beneficial for Tottenham Hotspur. Ange & Co. have been trying to steal the last available spot (per the current regulations) off Aston Villa.
However, the new regulation means, that a Premier League team ranked fifth on the table can qualify for the Champions League. Starting 2024/25, there will be 36 teams, instead of previously 32, competing for the ultimate European glory. Two of the ‘extra’ four spots are reserved for teams blowing to two of the top-performing domestic leagues across Europe.
According to Football London, Premier League and La Liga teams are the favourites to send the top five teams from their respective domestic leagues. This could come as a boon for Aston Villa and Tottenham, who are desperate for that fourth spot as of now.
However, a lot can change by the end of the season. Should any other nation ease past England in terms of their clubs’ performance in the EUFA competitions, EPL will lose the ‘fifth spot entry’. Thus, neither Ange Postecoglou nor Unai Emery will be willing to back down from the fight.
The breakdown of the new UEFA regulation
The current 32-team group stage will be replaced by a league phase featuring 36 teams in UEFA’s mainstream competitions (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League). Each team will be drawn against eight different opponents, two from each of the four seeding pots, playing four home and away games each.
It will be reduced to six opponents in the UEFA Conference League. The top eight teams will earn direct qualification to the round of 16. Teams ranked 9 to 24 will face each other in knockout play-offs. Teams ranked 25 to 36 will be eliminated from all competitions.

The format kicks off from the 2024-25 season. UEFA brought the format changes in an attempt to make the competition more intense and entertaining for the fans. Also, off the books, this is an attempt from Europe’s football governing body to eliminate the threat from the ‘Super League’ that created chaos a few years ago.
