Tottenham Hotspur star Micky van de Ven claims Cristian Romero is a world-class and fearless player
Tottenham Hotspur star Micky van de Ven says Cristian Romero has a fearless personality according to TNT Sports Argentina’s X (formerly Twitter) post. The Dutchman shared his opinion on Romero’s “aggressive” persona and said:
“He is not afraid of anything or anyone. It is said that he is a bit aggressive, but he is a world-class player with the ball and defending without it.”
van de Ven and Cuti Romero are knitting one of the best centre-back duos in the Premier League this season. They are two of the main men behind Tottenham’s success this season under the Aussie head coach. Micky arrived in Tottenham this season while Romero was signed by Nuno Espirito Santo on loan in 2021.
The duo quickly made their way into the starting XI upon arrival. It was the absence of Romero and Micky van de Ven after November that cost Tottenham their top spot in the Premier League. This shows the duo’s significance in north London.
Fearless Romero or careless Romero?
Cristian Romero’s style of play has often raised questions over his discipline. According to Football London, the Argentine has 26 yellow cards and four red cards to his name in 86 matches for Tottenham. His red card against Chelsea, the same game where Tottenham lost Maddison and van de Ven to injuries, was heavily criticized by the media and fans.
Romero faced a three-match ban soon after. However, despite the ‘aggressive’ approach, he remains to be a trusted man for Ange Postecoglou. He recently opened up about the support he receives from his manager and also about his efforts to be more disciplined during matches.
He shared his views during an interview on Tottenham’s matchday programme. Cristian Romero was promoted to the vice-captain’s role by Ange this season. Regardless of criticisms from all around, Cuti Romero’s aggressive approach helps the team as far as he doesn’t end up in the referee’s book.
