Tottenham goalie Guglielmo Vicario talks about a key component of AngeBall
Under the stewardship of Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham have gone from a cautious style of football to playing on the front foot. Strong on the ball, in transition, in defence and rapid at that. Irrespective of the results which have been fairly decent, Spurs have been a joy to watch for neutrals.
One of the key constituents of AngeBall is the side’s ability to build play out from the back. The ability of our full-backs to turn defence into attack within the blink of an eye and the centre-backs’ ability to hold a high line has been greatly detrimental to our positive style of play this season.
While it is a risky style of play, as far as we have game plans to mitigate the negative implications, this has to be the way forward. If it were not for so many frequent injury issues, Ange would surely have been challenging for the league title. While we are still in the running, we aren’t. The likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal are way too ahead to catch up at this stage.
Heavy Metal, the North London way!
Explaining AngeBall and how it is in training, Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario spoke about having to sometimes play as a sweeper-keeper and here is what he had to say via ESPN:
“We have to take some risks playing from the back because this is one of the situations we work on every day,”
“We can have a lot of solutions in this. You play with a high line so you have to be ready with some sweeps outside the box. But I think this could be the new era, the new way of football. Of course, we practice every day and I really enjoy it.”
But it’s not just about risk-taking; it’s about embracing a new era of football. AngeBall represents a paradigm shift, a departure from conventional tactics towards a more progressive style of play. And for Vicario and his teammates, it’s a philosophy they wholeheartedly embrace.
In the hands of Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham is a reflection of boldness and innovation on the pitch. The meticulous preparation in training, coupled with the unwavering commitment to AngeBall, epitomizes the club’s evolution under their visionary manager.
For Vicario himself, this comes as a strong opportunity to showcase his all-round skills as a good shot-stopper and a sweeper-keeper. However, he might have to do a whole lot better when it comes to set-piece situations.
