BBC pundit talks about his changed opinion regarding Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero
BBC Football pundit and former Tottenham Hotspur player Garth Crooks talks about his ‘changed’ perception of Cristian Romero. Crooks has played 163 matches for Tottenham across all competitions. He picks the Premier League Team of the Week for BBC after every matchday.
The former Premier League star has included Spurs centre-back Cuti Romero as one of his defenders. The pundit also shared his opinion on the Argentine. Surprisingly, Crooks wasn’t really fond of Romero initially. He said:
“Regular readers (of BBC) will know how furious I was with Romero because the defender was repeatedly getting sent off quite needlessly. However, he seems to have re-evaluated his game and realised that really good defenders don’t have to kick their opponents – just defend.”
Garth Crook also lauded Romero’s presence of mind after taking the responsibility of holding down the fort without Micky van de Ven. The Dutchman was substituted right after half-time following a hamstring injury.
The hot-headed Romero is long gone
Cristian Romero is a World Cup winner with Argentina but was often criticised for his reckless tackles. The Argentine has had quite a few moments where his losing composure has cost the team.
In the most recent incident, Tottenham were reduced to 10 men after Romero was given the marching orders after 33 minutes against Chelsea in November. A three-match ban for the Argentine followed it. He also has collected four yellow cards this season, two of which came in consecutive games after his return from the ban.
However, that was the last yellow card the Tottenham defender collected. He has since been a calm and composed person and a leader figure for the club. The 25-year-old recently spoke about his self-realisation concerning discipline and Ange Postecoglou’s part in helping him change.
