Tottenham defender Ben Davies displays humility as he credits success to luck.
Tottenham defender Ben Davies spoke to ESPN about his career, past and future recently. The conversation was a good way to deep dive into the veteran player’s psyche. It can really illustrate what went into making him the legend that he is, today.
Davies is a great player. He has spent nearly 10 years with the same club and he does not take his career for granted at all. He has focused on working on his game as a player, and has also focused externally on what works for him. In the interview, however, he gave a lot of credit to making it big to luck.
He has thus been called both inward-looking and outward-looking when it comes to football. Davies has also played with some of the greats, and he speaks of Harry Kane and Gareth Bales with awe. He speaks of their greatness, but also his uniqueness. This individuality and connectedness is what helps him relate to and be distinct from others.
The secret to success for Davies at Tottenham.
Ben Davies has to be given credit for understanding his coach. He speaks of Ange Postecoglou’s game strategy with a profound enthusiasm and understanding. However, he also knows that the game is bigger than the league that he is playing in. Undoubtedly, this has led to his success in many matches and his career overall.
However, one must not discount his humility among his many talents as a player. He is confident of his talents, but is not boastful, nonetheless which is a rare quality to find in players of his stature.
“I knew I was good, but I never felt I was elite, Football is a big chunk of luck, in my case when I got near the first team it was more about being capable and not looking out of your depth than it was about being so good that the coach had to pick me. In fact, some of the best players I played with at Under 15 or Under 16 level are out of the game entirely today… there’s a lot of them and I think it goes under the radar.”
Ben Davies to ESPN.
This is something to consider, because many good players may have been lost to luck. However, Davies’ words should be taken with a pinch of salt because he underplays his excellence as a player by saying that it all may have been a stroke of luck. Luck doesn’t work to make you a player at his peak even at the age of 31.
