Fabrizio Romano explains why Tottenham have not yet invoked Timo Werner clause
Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has publicly declared how happy he is with Timo Werner’s performance. The player has had a very positive impact on Spurs. He has featured in nine games, scoring two goals and assisting in two, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
The German joined Spurs on a loan from RB Leipzig in January. The former Chelsea star can be signed by the club permanently for €17 million next summer which is the buy deal in Tottenham’s loan offer. This is a bargain for a player like Werner. The hesitation by Tottenham, thus, does not make a lot of sense.
Romano has explained that Tottenham is unsure of its strategy going into the summer and would like to observe Timo Werner for longer before buying him. He has, after all, played only nine games for the club. Their reason for not activating the deal is that the transfer window strategy is not yet fully done.
According to Romano:
“It’s all about strategy. Some clubs decide their strategies around the end of April/beginning of May, not in March. The player has been at Tottenham for just two months and there are still two more to come. Spurs want to evaluate the forward a little longer and see how he performs during all the big matches left this season. The Premier League club will then decide whether to pay Werner’s €17m buy option, which for me, is totally normal.”
This strategy decision being put off for later might be a wise move on Tottenham’s part considering this has been a peak time for them. The club is performing surprisingly well and it is only fair that they get to exercise some independence in the pursuit of players.

It is evident that Timo Werner is happy at Tottenham and would love to continue being in the club. However, it is likely the club will evaluate him more. They will, thus, inevitably take time in deciding his future with Tottenham.
