Rain-Soaked draw at London Stadium, as Tottenham’s battle for Top Four intensifies

Tottenham Hotspur endured a tough day at the office as they were held to a rain-soaked draw at the London Stadium on Tuesday night. It was an opportunity for Ange Postecoglou to get a whiff into the traditional top four spot over Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, who were due to face a tough away day facing Manchester City at the Etihad, which they lost.

The Whites from North London looked to have an upper hand over their city rivals as they started the game well, which soon reaped dividends on the scoreboard as Brennan Johnson tapped home early on from a Timo Werner cross for his fifth goal of the season. It was ideal for the visitors to lead after the fifth minute, and it looked like it was going to be a long night for David Moyes’ side.

Although the hosts pegged back one soon with a Kurt Zouma goal from a corner, it was the game there; both sides created multiple chances only to not be clinical in front of goal. While Tottenham went on to dominate possession in North London, they couldn’t find the final product.

Spurs are contending with an intense battle for UEFA Champions League qualification going into the business end of the season. It is important for the Lilywhites to qualify for the Euoprean elite competition for multiple aspects beyond financial welfare. Contending among the best of Europe also gives an opportunity to attract the best talent in the continent and beyond, which proves the goodwill of the project that Daniel Levy & Co. have undertaken at the club.

It is important for Tottenham to look forward and ensure they don’t lose any opportunity to walk into the top four again. That is exactly what Ange would be saying in the dressing room, and that is what James Maddison has also acknowledged on his social media page.

The Tottenham midfielder uploaded a story urging the team to refocus as they prepare to face Nottingham Forest at the weekend.
