Brennan Johnson: Tottenham’s rising star shines bright in debut season
Tottenham Hotspur summer signing Brennan Johnson is impressing in his debut season wearing the Lilywhite colors. The Welshman moved to North London last summer in a £47.5 million Deadline Day deal from Nottingham Forest.
Despite enduring a slow start to life in London, the 22-year-old started catching up, and his influence at the club has been rising since December. Brushing off the initial challenges of a big money move to a top club, Brennan Johnson has scored essential goals in triumphs over Brentford and Brighton, as well as making notable contributions against Crystal Palace and Luton Town.
Johnson’s recent performances advocated a start against West Ham in an impending London derby yesterday, as he took the field alongside Timo Werner, who has also been instrumental in Spurs’ recent success.
His start was justified not long after the kick-off whistle, as Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson combined for Tottenham’s only goal in a 1-1 draw at West Ham. The German international skimmed in a cross from the left as Johnson fired Tottenham in front on the fifth minute mark.
Eclipsing the Nottingham record
With his latest scalp against the Hammers, Brennan Johnson has now been involved in more goals in the Premier League with Tottenham than with his former employers, Nottingham Forest. The feat comes with a significantly less number of games played as well. To put it into context, the 22-year-old has contributed to 12 goals in 24 appearances for Tottenham, while he only had 11 Premier League goal involvements for Forest in 41 games.
The Wales international is enjoying a purple patch as well, with a tally of three goals and three assists in his last seven PL appearances. This adds to his season stats of five goals and seven assists in 27 Premier League appearances this season.
