Tottenham need to fend off interest from Liverpool for Leeds United forward Crysencio Summerville

According to the Yorkshire Post, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are interested in signing in-form Leeds United forward Crysencio Summerville, who has caught the eye in the Championship this season.

With 18 goals and nine assists in 40 appearances across all competitions this season, Summerville has established himself as one of the protagonists of Daniel Farke’s side’s push to return to the Premier League for next season.

Leeds United have been a really enjoyable side to watch in the Championship so far this season and have had the results to go along with the performances. They are in prime position to attain direct qualification back to the Premier League, if not via the play-offs.

Whilst performances in the Championship are not the best yardstick to measure a player’s ability, it is definitely a starting point. If Spurs and Liverpool are showing interest in the Rotterdam-born youngster, it only means that they have seen something in him beyond just those numbers.

Regardless of whether it is in the Championship or the Premier League, finding the back of the net is a skill that not everyone is gifted with. Whilst throwing a bit of caution to the wind, it is okay to be excited about Summerville.

Moulding the next Son Heung-min?

Back in 2015, Tottenham Hotspur signed a relatively unknown 23-year-old from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of around £18m. That young winger has since made 400 appearances for the club, scoring 160 goals and providing 82 assists. Bargain deal? Absolutely. He goes by the name, Son Heung-min and captains Spurs today.

However, as they say, Father Time waits for no one and isn’t going to wait for the South Korean superstar either. At 31, he still has a few seasons left at the top but succession planning is a crucial step in ensuring that Tottenham don’t miss him when he eventually leaves.

Time for Summerville and Kulusevski to share the stage at Tottenham?
Time for Summerville and Kulusevski to share the stage at Tottenham?

Could Spurs bring in Summerville next summer and make him learn from one of the very best? At 22, the Leeds United winger is at the age where he can be Son’s understudy for the next couple of seasons, honing his craft in the Premier League and developing his game to a level where he is comfortable enough to take over from our captain and make that left-wing his very own.

Ange Postecoglou has shown a philosophy of placing immense trust in youth. We cannot think of another manager who could have covered for Harry Kane’s loss as well as the Australian tactician has this season. Giving him someone like Summerville to mould into the next superstar would be ideal in every sense.

It’s very easy to get carried away and Spurs need to stay grounded. Replacing the kind of impact and clutch performances that Son has produced is not going to be an easy task by any stretch of the imagination. The initial signs point to Summerville being a great signing for Tottenham but they would need to fend off interest from Liverpool to bring him in the summer.
