Former Tottenham man Eric Dier makes major Antonio Conte admission
Eric Dier recently reflected on his time at Tottenham Hotspur, highlighting Antonio Conte’s influence on his gameplay as the most impactful during his tenure. Dier, who currently plies his trade on loan at Bayern Munich, shed light on his experiences under various managers, including Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, and Ange Postecoglou.
The Australian tactician arrived at Spurs last summer and has transformed the side. Despite a challenging season with three different managers last term, Tottenham have shown remarkable transformation under the Australian’s guidance, positioning themselves for a potential Champions League qualification this season.
Surprisingly, when asked about Postecoglou’s tactical acumen, Dier revealed a unique approach. Contrary to popular belief, he mentioned that the former Celtic manager doesn’t emphasise tactical drills in training sessions. Instead, every training exercise remains meticulously crafted to mirror the desired style of play.
Here is what Dier told Football London:
“No, interestingly he really doesn’t do any tactical work, what he does is, every single training drill from Monday to Friday is drawn up to represent the way that he wants to play,”
“Conte, I could do it blind, but that was a lot of tactical work Monday to Friday, a lot of ten versus zero, walkthroughs – you were so well drilled, it would be ingrained in you.”
Conte’s methodical approach, which involved extensive tactical groundwork throughout the week, left an indelible mark on the players, but did not necessarily translate into success.
Dier’s insights offer a glimpse into the contrasting managerial styles at Tottenham, with each coach leaving their imprint on the squad. While Conte’s tactical focus fostered a disciplined and structured approach, Postecoglou’s emphasis on gameplay integration and fluidity has rejuvenated the team’s dynamic.
The Tottenham faithful can reflect on Dier’s observations with a sense of optimism, as the club continues its resurgence under Postecoglou’s stewardship. With a top-four position in the Premier League standings, Spurs remained poised for a return to Europe’s elite competition, a testament to the team’s resilience and adaptability amidst managerial transitions.
