Tottenham Hotspur eye summer move for Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams
Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams as the race for his services heats up ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.
Spurs are said to be one of the clubs interested in the 21-year-old’s signatures, per The Telegraph, whose rise at the Basque club has been nothing short of spectacular. While Spanish publication AS insists that Liverpool have joined Aston Villa and Tottenham in the race for Williams’s signatures.
The Spanish international penned a new deal at San Mamés in December 2023; however, his release clause is said to be attainable. Williams’ previous contract in the Basque Country was set to expire at the end of the ongoing season before he signed a new three-year deal.
Villa and Tottenham take the battle off the field.
Spurs find themselves embroiled in a transfer tug-of-war with Aston Villa for the signature of Nico Williams, adding another layer of intensity to their already fierce battle for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season. While Unai Emery’s side has maintained an edge throughout the campaign, Tottenham has surged ahead in the race for a coveted Champions League qualification spot.
Aston Villa’s persistent pursuit of Williams saw them make cautious attempts to lure him to Villa Park by triggering his release clause, both in January and last summer. However, the talented 2002-born prospect rebuffed their advances on both occasions.
Villa manager Unai Emery personally flew to the Basque country last June for a clandestine meeting with Williams at a secret hotel, yet the young star remained resolute in his commitment to stay with his current La Liga outfit.
