Van de Ven horror show caps Tottenham humiliation at St. James’ Park

Micky Van de Ven had a disastrous display at St. James Park as Newcastle United scored four past Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League yesterday. It was the most humiliation that Spurs have received since Ange Postecoglou took charge of the club.

This is the second consecutive time that the Magpies have humiliated Spurs in their territory. Some lessons clearly have not been learned.

All of Alexander Isak, Harvey Barnes, and Anthony Gordon were excellent. The latter stood out the most with his feather touches and dribbles that troubled Spurs’ defense. He created the first after forcing Udogie to give up the ball before calmly and precisely picking out Isak’s run and scoring the second a few moments later. Initially, he correctly predicted that Porro would do something foolish, and then he sent Micky van de Ven for hotdogs for the second time in three minutes.

Tottenham's coup of Micky van de Ven
Micky van de Ven had a bad game against Newcastle.

Van de Ven has been exceptional since singing for Tottenham last summer, but yesterday’s display showed that he is mortal as well. There are still levels to develop in his rawness before Spurs can enjoy him at his best.

These mistakes would help the Dutchman develop and learn, and that is what Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou admitted after the game when he was quizzed about Micky Van de Ven’s fallacy.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, the Lilywhites boss said (via the BBC):

“I think for all of them, that’s the life of an elite footballer; you’re going to make mistakes. I’m sure he’s going to make many more of them in his career. It’s about how you react to those mistakes. I think all of us as a group have a fair bit to learn from today.”

It is fair that we saw a few mistakes from Micky; this is his opportunity to get better and ensure these performances don’t happen again. It was a catastrophic game for Tottenham, surely, but there will be big learnings from it.
