Isak channels Henry as Ex-Spurs star Crouch compares Swede to Arsenal legend
Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Peter Crouch has used a weekend example of how Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak got the better of Spurs defender Micky van de Ven to exhibit the Belgian ace’s potential.
It was a disastrous weekend for the Lilywhites, as they were on the receiving end of a 4-0 thumping from Eddie Howe’s Magpies on Saturday. Spurs faithful couldn’t even find joy in Arsenal’s defeat today as top-four rivals Aston Villa clinched points against the Gunners.
It was a below-average performance from the North Londoners against Newcastle, as a series of several individual errors cost them the game. But what hurts more is how a few Newcastle players got the better of the dignified Tottenham individuals, Alexander Isak foremost.
The former Real Sociedad star tied Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s record for the most goals scored by a Swede in a Premier League season following his brace against the travelling Tottenham at the weekend. Both of his goals showcased his lightning-fast pace and calm finishing.
Isak’s first goal has churned up views on social media after he left highly-regarded defender Micky Van de Ven on the ground. While this was a massive vow to Tottenham hearts, Arsenal fans could find joy in Isak’s display against Ange’s Spurs. Isak has been linked with a possible move to Arsenal for some time now, and there have been reports about the Sweden international heading back on the Gunner’s wishlist ahead of the summer transfer window.
What did Peter Crouch say about Isak?
Following his performance against Tottenham and how he got better at Micky van de Ven individually, Peter Crouch drew comparisons between Isak and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, speaking to TNT Sports (via. Football. London):
“How many times did you see Thierry go through on goal and panic? It’s the same with Isak, if he goes through on a one-on-one you’re just always confident he’ll score,” former Stoke striker said.
“He’s someone I just love watching, so calm when he gets in those positions, obviously he cut Van de Ven up a few times today and he seems to just do the right decisions all the time, when he goes through one-on-one he’s so calm and just knows he’s going to score.”
“Great feet and he just leads the line so well, it’s a difficult thing to do as a centre forward to lead the line on your own.”
Micky van de Ven has been one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League leading up to that Newcastle game, although that brilliance from Isak to get the former Wolfsburg star among the memes and in the way he did was exemplary. That oozed quality. Tottenham fans would hope that Arsenal don’t get their hands on him.

For Van de Ven, this is a learning lesson in a young career; he will go back to the drawing board and come back better than before, wearing the experience at St. James Park with pride rather than humiliation.
