Levy’s bargain hunt? Tottenham consider free transfer move for Anthony Martial
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly weighing up a move for Manchester United ace Anthony Martial for the upcoming summer transfer window, per Tuttosport.
Spurs are said to be in the market for a striking position after having signed no centre-forward since the departure of Harry Kane last summer in a record-breaking deal. The Lilywhites did bring in Timo Werner in January, although he has primarily played on the left flank since his loan move from Leipzig.
While a marquee forward is on the transfer list for Daniel Levy, it is also necessary to ensure the club has a high-potential backup upfront, something that the Lilywhites struggled to have when Harry Kane was leading the line.
In comes Anthony Martial. His contract at Old Trafford is up at the end of the ongoing campaign. Tottenham are looking to capitalize on his contract situation and bring him to the N17 on a free transfer. He has made 317 appearances for Manchester United since joining from Monaco in a highly anticipated transfer in 2015.
Juventus hesitant as Spurs eye Man United forward
There have been claims that the North Londoners will face competition from Juventus for the Frenchman’s signature. However, the Turin-based Italian giants are hesitant to approach the 28-year-old, who has netted just twice in nineteen appearances for Erik ten Hag’s man this season. That, complemented by the former Monaco striker’s high salary of €6 million a year is considered too high for the Bianconeri.
This gives room for Daniel Levy & Co. to sweep in and land Martial’s signatures. Realistically, signing him could mean an end for Timo Werner at Tottenham. Both players are similar in how they can operate and the potential they have. Both of them can also play from the left flank as an alternative to a preferred centre-forward role.
While Martial has had his injury issues, signing him for a bit-part role means he could have the space to recover and help Tottenham from the bench.
