Tottenham Hotspur star is ‘elite’ according to Chelsea legend
Chelsea legend, Ashley Cole was recently speaking to Euro Sport and a certain star from Tottenham popped into his mind. Cole is one of the best full-backs to ever grace a football pitch. His exploits down the left flank are truly the stuff of legend.
He was shedding light on his experiences with the Blues. How his debut went down, the changes that come with retirement and how winning becomes a job when you play for one of the top-flight clubs.
Ashley also compared the fullbacks from his generation to current fullbacks. He was quick to point out how that one particular position has evolved a lot over the years. Let’s have a look at how he gave props to a Tottenham star while mentioning this generation’s top fullbacks.
“You have to be better in all areas of the pitch. Technically, you have to be better than my generation of full-back, which you have to applaud and give credit to the top ones – Trent [Alexander-Arnold], Reece James, [Andy] Robertson, bombing up and down, and can do everything. Udogie at Tottenham I think is elite.”
Cole says it’s good that Fullbacks are now encouraged to go inside and overload the enemy’s defensive line. He also outright stated that to be a successful fullback in current football you have to be better than the previous generation.
There’s a lot more running involved and fullbacks can now affect games way more than we’ve seen in the past. Chelsea legend, Ashley Cole is right to call Destiny Udogie an elite player and his best is still yet to come.
At just 21 Udogie is already being praised by the likes of Ashley Cole. It’s safe to say that the Italian defender has a bright future ahead of him.
