Should the Timo Werner signing be made permanent by Tottenham amidst his injury and consistency issues?
The defeat against Arsenal in the Derby can only be called traumatic for Tottenham Hotspur. After maintaining a winning streak for so long, Spurs are recently seeing a lot of losses in games. This can be credited to the fact that multiple players are out on injuries.
However, even after the players have returned, the team seem to be struggling. Multiple players are committing blunders in the game play, and Timo Werner’s name is one that comes up repeatedly. Werner was indispensable to the team in the beginning of his tenure. However, recently, he has been a liability in important matches.
There is no doubt that Werner is a good player, both in agility and ability. However, his brilliance has been left to the fans’ imagination. It is interesting why Ange Postecoglou seems to have such unwavering faith in the player, and is so reluctant to let him go, or give him less important positions.
Is an upgrade necessary?
Timo Werner has shown flashes of brilliance in his initial games but has seldom been consistent. He was extremely important to Tottenham and Postecoglou got him on loan from Liepzig because he thought Werner best understands his game. Recent games have shown that Werner has fumbled important goals in big matches.
Pundit has gone so far as to call him the “worst player” that Tottenham currently has. Therefore, it seems necessary for Tottenham to upgrade to a new player instead of paying the 20 million Euros and making Werner permanent.
The injury scare against Arsenal has made Werner an obvious doubt for Thursday’s Premier League against his former club Chelsea. This will cost them another match given how important the position Werner plays in is. It is not looking good for Tottenham.
The club should consider getting another player to play defender in Tottenham in place of Timo Werner. Making the summer transfer permanent if no drastic changes are made to his performance can be detrimental for Tottenham. Alternatively, Spurs might also be looking to sign Radu Dragusin, or Djed Spence in place of Werner.
