Ange Postecoglou takes the blame for ‘poor’ Tottenham display in Chelsea clash

Three consecutive losses and a lack of attacking threat

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou snapped back at the reporter in his post-match press conference as the Australian gaffer expressed his frustrations following the North Londoners latest outing against Chelsea.

It was another poor display by the Lilywhites, as a defeat at Chelsea makes it three successive losses for the club following Spurs defeats to Newcastle United and Arsenal ahead of yesterday’s game. This leaves Tottenham with very slim chances of a UEFA Champions League qualification as they continue to chase fourth-placed Aston Villa. Even though Spurs have a game in hand, they are seven points adrift of Unai Emery’s side.

The Lilywhites accumulated only three shots on target against Chelsea, adding to frustration as goals from Trevoh Chalobah and Nikolas Jackson sealed the win for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

This is also Tottenham’s second London derby defeat in five days, as Ange Postecoglou admitted to taking the blame for the club’s latest setback. He insists that it should be his responsibility to ensure the side he puts out makes an impact, something that his side failed to do against the West Londoners yesterday.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the Australian gaffer said:

“It’s not good enough, and I’ve got to take responsibility for that; it is on me.”

“I’m the manager; I’m the one that’s putting them out there, and it was nowhere near good enough. As I’ve said, I’ve got to look at myself in all this and see how I can have more of an impact.”

“When we put in a performance like we did in the first half, it means obviously my message isn’t getting through; that’s for me to address.”

Four games left and a chance to end on a positive note as Spurs chase an unlikely UCL qualification.

The former Celtic manager was then quizzed about what his message to the squad was, although the 58-year-old snapped back in his reply as a Champions League finish began to look out of reach for Spurs.

Ange responded,

“Come on, mate, we didn’t play well. What do you want, me to sit here and write you a dossier of where we went wrong?”

All hope is not lost, as Spurs still have four games to go. Anything could happen; let’s stay positive and try to end the season on a high note. Tottenham now visit Anfield Stadium, and a performance there would certainly bring back some lost confidence in the squad.
