Full-back frenzy? Spurs set for summer revamp as Postecoglou targets new blood

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou wants to sign a new full-back at White Hart Lane this summer, and the Australian gaffer is willing to sanction the sale of a big-name player in a similar position to support his cause.

The Lilywhites are in an intense battle to finish in the Champions League and qualify for the competition for next season. Following a run of dropping nine of the available nine points, the North Londoners are in a tricky position as their recent slump in form has exposed their vulnerabilities and raised questions about their ability to secure a top-four finish.

Tottenham are set to face Liverpool, Burnley, Manchester City, and Sheffield United in that order before they call the curtains on the season, allowing Ange to focus on transfer business.

Former Tottenham, Leeds, and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, in an exclusive interview on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, acknowledged how the club has concerns about the full-back positions, especially the left-back position. The North Londoners have seen Destiny Udogie establish himself as the first choice on the left defensive flank this season; however, following his injury, he has undergone surgery to his left quadriceps, which is going to keep him sidelined for the remainder of the season and the Euros.

Robinson insists that watching Davies play against Bukayo Saka when Spurs played Arsenal showed how the club lacks depth in the position.

Paul Robinson went on to add that Ange Postecoglou would also want to add a center-back to the roster at his disposal next season.

Three consecutive losses and a lack of attacking threat
The manager is looking to strengthen the full-back positions, particularly depth at left-back this summer.

“He’ll look to strengthen in the full-back areas,” said Paul Robinson, speaking on the Inside Track podcast.

“With Udogie out, I was concerned about Arsenal with Ben Davies playing that inverted full-back role against Bukayo Saka. Everyone saw the way Saka played in the first half, and he scored due to the susceptibility of Spurs down that side.”
