Spurs’ inconsistency costs them as late fight not enough after Liverpool rout

Tottenham Hotspur endured a difficult defeat against Liverpool, as they have now lost four games in a row at the business end of the season. This proves difficult for the North Londoners, as this effectively takes them away from the Champions League race.

Spurs have enjoyed an impressive campaign this season, as Ange Postecoglou has proven his managerial credentials. However, they cannot essentially come through when the stakes are high, which can cost the Lilywhites a place among the European elites next season.

Liverpool defeated Tottenham at Anfield Stadium yesterday, and it appeared that Spurs were in for another thrashing as the hosts took a four-goal lead going into the hour mark. However, the substitutes made a mark for the North Londoners as Postecoglou threw on Oliver Skipp, James Maddison, and Richarlison following Harvey Elliott’s goal.

James Maddison has been subject to massive criticism lately; however, former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton was left impressed by the England international’s performance against the Merseyside Reds yesterday.

Speaking on 606, Chris Sutton said:

“I think the truth is that Spurs at this moment in time, they have been really inconsistent as of late. Also, Maddison was on the bench. He came on actually and made a huge impact today.”

Can Maddison’s performance spark a Tottenham revival?

This comes as a massive boost to the 27-year-old, who recently lost his place in Ange Postecoglou’s starting eleven. He has not been able to build on the start he enjoyed after moving to North London, and his recent form could prove costly with the Euro Championship just around the corner.

Hopefully for Spurs and for the sake of his England call-up to EURO, Maddison will build on his performance against Liverpool.
