Can Tottenham overcome their set-piece struggles?
Tottenham Hotspur and Guglielmo Vicario has been subject to massive criticisms in recent times owing to their issues in defending set-pieces off-late, and the Italian goalkeeper has spoken about fixing the dead-ball problem.
The North Londoners conceded two corners in the North London derby with the former Udinese goalkeeper struggling to shoulder Ben White as he saw the ball go past him twice without making a convincing challenge. While this transferred into massive headlines following the defeat against Arsenal, the Lilywhites face similar problems in defending corners four days later in a London Derby against Chelsea. Spurs conceded a corner again at the Bridge which brought more headlines and criticisms followed.
It didn’t help Vicario’s aid when Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah went on to speak about how the Blues wanted to target their London neighbours from set-pieces.
The Italian International now has conceded 16 goals from dead balls in the English top-tier this season which sits only ahead of relegation contending Burnley, Luton and Nottingham Forest.
Vicario proposes solution to Spurs set-piece nightmare
Vicario in a recent interview insists that Tottenham can put their set-piece issues to bed by showing more desire to attack the ball. The 27-year-old in an interview via. The Mirror said: “I’m not worried, we have to embrace this challenge and demand more from each other. For me, it’s about mindset to win the first contact and the desire, not to let them win the first contact of the ball, it’s just that. We are not at the level we have to be.”
He has to be more aggressive in his physical contacts as well, Tottenham cannot go into another season with set piece problems as it becomes an easy way for teams to get an up on the North Londoners.
