Paul Merson says Tottenham star James Maddison is no longer the same player
Former Arsenal man Paul Merson believes that Tottenham star James Maddison, who was once ‘flying’ is no longer the same player. The 27-year-old attacking midfielder has not been the same since his return from injury, and that has cost Tottenham.
He even saw himself demoted to the bench in our recent losses over Chelsea and Liverpool. Speaking of him, here is what Merson had to say live on Sky Sports.
“Maddison has come back and he hasn’t been the same player. He was flying before he got injured. Son had to go away for the Asian Cup as well. They are a decent team. They need a couple of good players.”
“I don’t think the manager has done anything wrong. I think the manager is an absolute breath of fresh air.”
In 26 appearances across all competitions this season, he has four goals and seven assists to boot. However, he has to return to earlier form, which we saw in the opening part of the season, to have an impact on his club, and potentially, make it to the Euros with England later this year as well.
Players abroad like Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham have been performing to very high standards this season, putting Madders’ place in Gareth Southgate’s squad at risk. However, if he can find a quick turnaround, he might as well see himself in the reckoning.
But let’s not get too ahead of ourselves, yeah? Maddison’s focus should be on Tottenham right now. Under Ange Postecoglou, we’ve got big ambitions, and Maddison is a key part of that plan. We know he’s got the talent, mate, there’s no denying that. But he needs to find his rhythm again, get back to his best, and start influencing games like we know he can.
It’s tough coming back from injury, mate, we all know that. But Madders needs to dig deep, find that inner drive, and rediscover his form. We’ve seen glimpses of his quality this season, but we need more consistency from him, especially in the big games. That’s where the top players really make a difference.

So, let’s not write Maddison off just yet, yeah? He’s still got plenty to offer, and most would reckon he’s got the potential to be a real game-changer for Tottenham. But he needs to put in the hard yards, get his head down, and work his way back to the top. With the right attitude and determination, there’s no reason why he can’t bounce back and become the player we all know he can be.
