Alan Shearer says the Tottenham vs Newcastle friendly in Australia is ‘crazy’
Alan Shearer is not happy about the upcoming friendly between Tottenham and Newcastle which is set to be played in Australia. The two teams will be facing each other on Wednesday night at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Following that the Magpies will also be facing an A-League All-Star team. Shearer says the fixture is ‘crazy’ considering some of the players on these squads have to play at the Copa America or EUROs in less than a month. Here’s what he had to say. (h/t The Mirror)
“Can you imagine if you’re a player who is playing in either the Copa America or Euro 2024 having to do that? Madness. Crazy,”
The former Newcastle United striker added that he would not have been happy if he was in the same situation. Kieran Trippier who will be involved in the upcoming match between Newcastle and Tottenham is also unhappy about the situation.
He argues that this should not be happening during a year with an international tournament. To be fair the added stress could be harmful for the players. They will play for their respective countries up until mid-July.
Following that the players will only have about a month of rest before they’re back to playing club football again. It could lead to an increase in injuries so, clubs should avoid putting all this extra stress on their players.
However, the match is already set to happen on Wednesday night. On a more positive note, it should serve to be an interesting affair. There have been 25 goals between the two teams during their last five appearances.
