Lukas Podolski admits he wanted Arsenal to sign Tottenham legend Harry Kane
According to The Daily Mail, Lukas Podolski, the 2014 World Cup champion and former Arsenal star, has hinted at wanting an ex-Tottenham Hotspur player to join the Gunners in 2023. It’s fair to say that the choice is an obvious one.
Podolski, who moved from Koln to Arsenal in 2012, spent three years with the team. During his tenure, he scored 31 goals and provided 15 assists in just 82 games, an impressive feat for someone who primarily played out wide.
Since leaving Arsenal, the number nine shirt that Podolski wore has seen several contenders. However, Podolski recently revealed that he had intended for an ex-Tottenham player to wear it at Arsenal last year.
Former Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski wanted to see the Gunners move for Harry Kane last summer. Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said after being asked who he would like to see wearing his old No. 9 jersey:
“Harry Kane was the one who wanted to change, but with his history of Tottenham, of course it is not possible to move to Arsenal. That is why he moved to Bayern Munich. It was a good move for Bayern Munich and him.”
“He was the only option on the market. Bayern paid a lot for him, but he’s scoring goals like he did before. It’s nice to see a player from the Premier League coming to the Bundesliga.”
Almost every major team in the world coveted the Englishman when he decided to leave Tottenham at the end of the 2023–2024 season. However, Bayern Munich emerged as the only genuine candidate for his signing. The German giants secured his services for a club-record fee of £82 million, taking him to the Allianz Arena.
Harry Kane has been nothing short of a hero for Spurs, scoring 280 goals and providing 61 assists in 435 appearances. These stats are no joke, as they show the English star’s important tenure in North London.
After watching Kane’s amazing 50-goal contribution to his new team in only his debut season for the German cub, it must have made Podolski’s initial belief only grow stronger that Kane should’ve joined Arsenal instead of Munich.
