Ledley King reveals when he had to step up for Tottenham Hotspur
Former Tottenham star Ledley King recalled his memory of returning from a seven-month injury with a 2-0 win against Liverpool by Rafael van der Vaart and Luka Modric Spurs’ scoring heroes at Anfield in 2010/11 campaign.
King is considered one of the great defenders and legends of the Lillywhites after serving 14 years in North London. The former English player also served Spurs as coaching staff under the Portuguese boss Jose Mourinho back in 2020.
Injury was a concern for a large part of his career, The English defender was battling with a groin injury in the 2010/11 season and spent over six months on the touchline. The player, who had just recovered from the injury, attended just two training sessions with the team and ended up starting for the Spurs in the second-last league game.
It was a game against Liverpool in the most heated stadium, Anfield. King was asked whether he wanted to start in the game by Spurs manager Harry Redknapp just minutes before the match. King played the whole 90 minutes in Anfield, and the Lillywhites ended up the match by winning 2-0 with the help of Rafael van der Vaart and Luka Modric’s goals.
“We won 2-0. I was out for seven months and I had one or two training sessions. I didn’t even go to play, I went to watch and I ended up playing in the game.”
King shared his memory while speaking to Talk Sport; The win was crucial for the Spurs as they overtook the fifth spot from Liverpool at the end of the season and secured the Europa League spot.

It was one of the last matches for King, who also had many injury issues. After making 322 appearances in all competitions for the North London side, he announced his retirement from football in July 2012. King also returned as the club’s ambassador once Mourinho left Spurs.
