Tottenham side with the Premier League in their legal battle against Manchester City
As per The Times UK, Manchester City has shocked everyone when they filed a legal suit against The Premier League over commercial rules. Tottenham Hotspur have taken side with the Premier League and provided them with information to help with their defence in the lawsuit. The legal action has caused a civil war in the league.
Mail Sport has learned that Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Newcastle sympathize with Manchester City’s stance as they enter into conflict with the Premier League over financial regulations. Ahead of a Monday hearing where City aims to challenge restrictions on spending by companies linked to club owners, these three clubs perceive City’s concerns as legitimate.
Chelsea has issued a statement contesting the updated regulations regarding associated party transactions (APT), particularly concerning ownership of multiple clubs. Additionally, Villa’s co-owner, Egyptian billionaire Nassef Sawiris, shares frustrations with City’s chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak over imposed spending limits, reflecting a close relationship between the two.
Around 10 to 12 clubs have expressed support for the Premier League and its regulations, framing the situation as a kind of internal dispute. Among these supporters are Manchester United, Arsenal, Fulham, Wolves, Brighton, and Tottenham. Some have provided testimony, while others have submitted letters in support.
City, facing 115 charges of violating Premier League spending rules, have initiated legal proceedings seeking changes to APT regulations, which were introduced following the Saudi-backed Newcastle takeover in November 2021. They also seek damages, alleging that the current system unfairly targets clubs with Middle Eastern ownership, characterizing it as a product of “tyranny of the majority” and discriminatory.
It will be interesting to see how these events pan out in the upcoming months as they will set a precedent for the future of the Premier League. Tottenham have chosen the side of the Premier just like most of the other big clubs in the league. They feel that legal action brought by Manchester City against the Premier League is incorrect and instead, Manchester City should be the one put on trial for the 115 outstanding charges of violating the Financial Fair Play rules.

Tottenham Hotspur, like most other clubs, believe that Manchester City are in the wrong and should be severely penalized for their FFP violations. We think that Tottenham’s stance is correct as per the current rules of the FFP. The Premier League should enforce the rules or else scrap them to avoid such situations in the future. FFP rules can be considered as unfair to smaller teams that wish to compete at the top by spending their owner’s money. It also keeps the power centre in the hands of traditionally big clubs in the past.
