Wenham questions Tottenham Hotspur transfer strategy after Kelly loss
Tottenham Hotspur expressed interest in acquiring Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer this summer; however, Newcastle United won the race for his signatures, and John Wenham, owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, has questioned the club over not pursuing signatures for the 25-year-old.
Wenham is surprised that the North Londoners did not fortify their interests in his services and compete with the Toons for his signatures.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed that former Bristol City star Kelly will be moving to St James Park on Thursday, he wrote on X: “Kelly has signed a five-year contract as a Newcastle player; deal 100% completed.”
Free transfer fumble?
Spurs have a long-standing interest in Lloyd Kelly, with Bournemouth rejecting a £20 million bid from the Lilywhites last summer, per The Athletic.
Wenham, in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, expressed his surprise at Kelly’s Newcastle move and the lack of Spurs moments for his signatures:
“Kelly looks set to join Newcastle on a free. That was someone we previously offered £20 million to sign, so I’m surprised we’ve just watched on as that deal has happened.
“We seemingly didn’t challenge Newcastle for his signature, which is strange.”
Wenham is right in a sense, as Spurs were willing to pay over £20 million for his signatures less than a year ago, and when the opportunity arises to acquire him on a free transfer, you don’t push the player enough for a move to the N17. His versatility could come in handy as the club lacks depth in the CB and LB positions.
