Tottenham urged to include sell-on clause in potential Djed Spence departure
Tottenham Hotspur FC defender Djed Spence has been linked with a move to Italian giants Genoa, with talks between the clubs recognized to be in advanced stages at the time of writing. Amid the advancement of the transfer, the owner of reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, John Wenham, insists that the club should hold a significant sell-on clause as part of negotiations for Spence’s departure.
The North Londoners signed him from Middlesbrough in 2022; however, he has not been able to find his feet at White Hart Lane. He has not been able to find his feet at Hotspur Way and has only made six appearances wearing the Spurs badge before he was shipped off on three temporary spells away from N17. Spence found a bit of his old self in his last loan at Genoa, and they are willing to take a chance on him on their books.
Wenham sees big future for Spence with Spurs benefitting later
John Wenham believes that Djed Spence will impress in Serie A only to return to the Premier League in some time for a “huge fee.” And he wants to ensure that the club gets a cut out of any possible future move, with Wenham suggesting a 40 percent sell-on clause to be included in his deal.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Wenham says:
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Spence returned to the Premier League in a couple of years for a huge fee. Therefore, if he is going to be sold for less than £8.5 million, a sell-on clause has to be agreed.
“I hope that’s what the negotiations are about, and I hope Tottenham push for 40 percent because I think he will return to the Premier League.
“Selling Spence is an important part of the rebuild, and I therefore think he will be sold in the coming weeks.”
Spence is closing in on a move to Genoa, and as Fabrizio Romano took to X, formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday night to confirm the advancement of the transfer, “Understand that Genoa have sent a formal bid to Tottenham to sign Djed Spence. Negotiations are ongoing between clubs, now up to Spurs, with a final decision to follow soon.”

Spence has shown his talent and high potential; however, he has struggled with confidence and pressure since his move to the Spurs. A move away where he can work on himself away from the limelight should do him good and benefit his development in the long run.
