Tottenham lead race to sign prolific Brentford striker Ivan Toney
Tottenham Hotspur are expected to secure the signature of a prominent striker during the upcoming summer transfer period, with England’s Ivan Toney drawing interest. In an interview with Football Insider, ex-Spurs defender Alan Hutton indicated that Ferguson might not immediately transform the team but would improve under Ange Postecoglou over time.
Instead, he suggested that the club invest heavily in an established and well-known forward like 28-year-old Toney, whose arrival could lift the team to greater heights.
Hutton said:
“When you’re looking at strikers, do you want somebody who’s ready-made and is going to come in and affect your team right now? You’d have to pay for that. You’d be talking about Toney and these kind of guys, that’s big money.”
“Or, somebody like Evan Ferguson, he’s got the ability, he can score goals and he’s only going to get better, he’s young and hungry to learn. There’s a lot of good that comes with that, but is he going to come in, play week in, week out, and score the goals you need? It depends on the process and what the likes of Daniel Levy and Ange are looking for.”
“If they want to go and compete, Ferguson can do it, but he’s still young, still learning and needs to improve. I think, if they got that big-hitter and big name at this moment in time, Toney would be incredible, it would really elevate them to that next level.”

According to sources from Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are currently in pole position to secure the signing of the Brentford star ahead of West Ham, as they plan to bring in a high-profile striker this summer.
Since Harry Kane’s departure, Postecoglou’s team has been without a traditional striker, with Richarlison failing to make an impact while Son Heung-min continues to be preferred on the left flank.
Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, aged 19, has emerged as a potential candidate for the number nine role, but it is acknowledged that he would require time to adjust to the demands and expectations of being Tottenham’s first-choice forward.
Signing Ivan Toney could greatly benefit Tottenham Hotspur. As a proven goal-scorer in the Championship, Toney has consistently delivered for Brentford with his physicality, aerial ability, and clinical finishing. Tottenham’s need for a reliable striker intensified after Harry Kane’s departure, and Toney’s skill set aligns well with the role of a primary attacker.
However, Tottenham must consider Toney’s adaptation to the Premier League and his fit within their tactical framework under their current manager. The transition from the Championship to the Premier League can be challenging, and Tottenham needs assurance that Toney can maintain his goal-scoring form at the higher level.

Financially, while Toney may command a significant fee, his potential to bolster Tottenham’s attacking prowess and provide a consistent goal threat justifies the investment. If Toney can seamlessly integrate into Tottenham’s squad and replicate his Championship success, his signing could address a critical need and enhance Tottenham’s competitiveness in the Premier League.
