Tottenham face key setback as they mull Sergio Reguilon sale
Tottenham Hotspur are gearing up for a major summer transfer overhaul in the off-season, as Daniel Levy and his team aim to elevate the squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. Outgoings will play a crucial role in making space for new faces, and North Londoners’ defender Sergio Reguilon is expected to be one of the players who could be on his way out.
The former Real Madrid star has had a tumultuous campaign in 2023/24 and has subsequently seen his stock take a hit. He ended the season on a high note with a splendid spell of form on loan at city neighbours Brentford, following a mixed first half of the campaign on loan at Manchester United. The fact that the Red Devils decided to part ways mid-season is rather telling.
Ndombele Precedent?
Reguilon can be considered surplus to requirements at Spurs and the North Londoners can consider selling the 27-year-old this summer. However, as per John Wenham, owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, the Spaniard’s £100,000-a-week wages remain a significant hurdle in attracting suitors. Wenham, in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, said:
“Tottenham will struggle to sell Reguilon because of his £100,000-per-week wages. That is why Brentford had no interest in keeping him. We’ve got to find something to do with him. He has one year left on his contract, and we need to try and find a move for him.”
As we saw with Tanguy Ndombele, Tottenham could willingly take a hit and cut their losses by terminating the player’s contract. However, unlike the Frenchman, Reguilon has a better resale value and could still bring in some money. This presents a tricky situation for Daniel Levy and Ange Postecoglou, and it remains to be seen what they decide to do.

At 27, Reguilon is still in his prime and can be a valuable asset in the right system. However, given that he was sent out on two consecutive loans last season, it is fair to assume that, as things stand, he has no future in North London. It will be interesting to see how much Levy and his team are willing to compromise to end the relationship this summer.
