Homecoming on the cards? Tottenham eye North London reunion with Sporting CP star Marcus Edwards
Tottenham Hotspur FC are considering re-signing academy graduate Marcus Edwards to enhance their offensive depth this summer, according to Iberian outlet Correio da Manha.
The 25-year-old has been on Tottenham’s radar for some time, and a reunion now appears likely with a potential €20 million transfer from Sporting Lisbon. Edwards left Spurs in 2019 to join Vitória in Portugal.
After impressive performances in Liga Portugal, Sporting CP secured his services in the winter of 2022. Edwards has since delivered consistently strong performances at the José Alvalade Stadium, making him a valuable target for Tottenham as they look to strengthen their squad.
Goals, assists, and homegrown quota – The driving forces behind Spurs’ Edwards pursuit
Signing Marcus Edwards could significantly benefit Tottenham on multiple fronts. Up front, Edwards brings a smooth ball-carrying ability and a highly technical understanding of the game. Additionally, his return would help Tottenham meet their homegrown player quota for the 2024–25 season.
In the 2023/24 campaign, the 25-year-old contributed to 15 goals, scoring six and assisting nine. With only two years left on his contract with Sporting CP, Tottenham are eager to bring Edwards back home. Ange Postecoglou is keen to add quality and depth to the offensive unit, and Edwards fits the bill perfectly.
Furthermore, Tottenham could secure Edwards at a reduced fee, as they still own 35% of his player rights, effectively lowering the transfer cost. This financial advantage makes the deal even more appealing for the North London club.
